Newfie Nappers
Ron and Zita Curran, snowbirds from St. John's in Newfoundland, Canada, bask in the sun on a cold Monday afternoon at Lake Seminole Park. With temperatures in the forties, few but native northerners were out enjoying the day. Moments earlier a group of at least 20 from Nova Scotia finished an afternoon picnic. The couple comes to their condo in St. Petersburg each October and stays through May. (Times photo by David Zentz)

Despite the cold, and considering they had come so far and paid for a hotel the night before, they were not about to let him down. Hop, Skip and a Jump

Dance Dance Dance
Rosemary Spitzbart, 80, enjoys a dance with Tom Fleck, 68, during the 30th Anniversary Celebration of the Neighborly Care Network Lealman Adult Day Services Center in St. Petersburg. Neighborly opened the first adult day care in the nation in 1968 to provide clients with an alternative to being placed in nursing homes. Diaper Derby
Brian Matuszewski balances his 16-month-old son Foster on his shoulders during the ninth annual Diaper Derby at the Seminole Recreation Center on Saturday. Babies in three age groups, 6- to 11 months, 12- to 17 months and 18- to 24 months, competed in four categories - chubbiest cheeks, cutest smile, parent look-a-like, most hair and perkiest personality. Missing a Friend

Reflecting on his Art
Dave Kent, 60, uses a hand-held mirror to examine the perspective of a painting he is working on as he and his friend, Scott West, paint the scenery of Old Tampa Bay along the north side of Gandy Blvd. on Saturday afternoon. "I see mistakes that I wouldn't see without it," Kent says of the mirror. He and West are both psychotherapists from Lakeland who share an interest in painting and travel mostly in Florida, but as far away as New York, to work on landscapes. While West has been painting for about ten years, Kent has been doing so since his late twenties, having studied as an abstract artist at New York University and at the Art Students League in New York before moving on to what he said was a more lucrative endeavor. Wet Poodle
With a hand from his mother, Heather Biggs, Devin White, 11, dries off his grandmother's poodle, Maurice, after the two went swimming in the Gulf of Mexico at Dog Beach in Ft. DeSoto Park on New Year's Day as a dreary drizzle begins to fall. White was visiting his mother and grandmother in St. Petersburg and, despite the gloomy weather, was set on getting some swimming in before heading home to his father in San Francisco on Monday. Painting Prep
John Harte, 79, sits in Straub Park in St. Petersburg sketching in preparation for a watercolor of the Grayl's Hotel on Beach Drive, part of a continuing series of watercolors of notable area buildings, including the Progress Energy Building, the Pennsylvania Hotel and Park Shore Plaza. Originally from Nebraska, Harte has lived and worked as an artist from his home studio in St. Petersburg for 5 years. On the winding journey from Nebraska to Florida he spent 21 years in California and was a commercial artist in New York City. Locally, Harte says he has work exhibited in such places as the Red Cloud Indian Arts Gallery, Sarasota's Palm Avenue Gallery and Miami's Historical Museum of Southern Florida, as well as in the California's Oakland Museum of California and the Palm Springs Desert Museum. "I particularly like to do buildings under construction and historic buildings," Harte says. The Grayl's Hotel building is a Spanish Mission style building erected in 1922, according to its website. Kwanzaa
Josiah Austin, 5, left, and Imhotep Tyler, 10, play the drums at the start of the African American Arts Council of Greater Tampa Bay's celebration of the first day of Kwanzaa, known as Umoja, or Unity, at the Boys and Girls Club in St. Petersburg on Monday night. Celebrated the 26th of December through the 1st of January, Kwanzaa is an African American and Pan-African holiday celebrating family, community and culture. Although modern Kwanzaa was invented by Dr. Maulana Karenga in 1966, "first fruits" celebrations, which, in Swahili are called "matunda ya kwanza" are said to date back to ancient Egypt. Kwanzaa celebrations will continue each night this week at different locations throughout St. Petersburg.
